Telstra says it will run a trial of the National Broadband Network (NBN) in three Tasmanian towns to test how its customers can use the infrastructure.

The telecommunications giant says it will run the pilot program in 100 homes and businesses in the Tasmanian towns of Scottsdale, Midway Point and Smithton, which are already connected to the NBN.

Telstra CEO David Thodey announced the trial on a visit to Hobart on Tuesday, saying the company wanted to see how it could use the network.

"The pilot is an opportunity for Telstra to assess how BigPond broadband services and next-generation digital home products ... perform over the NBN," Mr Thodey said.

"It's unusual for Telstra to access another network rather than use our own, so it's important we ensure our products and services work smoothly."

Mr Thodey said the NBN gave Tasmania an "enormous opportunity" in the fields of health and education.
